Google is not as important as we think
Just because most people use Google as their favourite search engine does not mean we should spend too much of our time worrying about it. It seems that most people fail to find what they want on their first search. That's either because their search term wasn't specific enough, or becuase the results were too varied, from the wrong country or just generally unsastisfying.
What people do next is crucial to your web site success though. A recent survey shows that only 40% per cent of people try refining their search term. What's important for your promotional success is that 60% of people try another search engine - mostly Yahoo and MSN Search. It is therefore important to make sure your web site is optimized not just for Google, but for these other search engines. Also don't spend all your time trying to get to the top in Google. You might get better results by being at the top in Yahoo and MSN - picking up all the secondary searches.
